Edible Stories
Ivy Tech Community College of Central Indiana

Event Description:

Food and stories go hand in hand. From Charles Dickens’s sumptuous feast at the end of A Christmas Carol, to a mother lovingly tending mole sauce in Laura Esquivel’s Like Water for Chocolate, or Eric Carle’s Very Hungry Caterpillar devouring its way through candy and fruit, food has always been used as a storytelling element for readers of all ages and backgrounds. But what if food told the story instead? This event will explore how food can be used to express literary themes. The students' diverse backgrounds will be showcased as they tell stories infused with personal meaning. The visually arresting food pieces and accompanying displays will lead visitors to reflect on how food and stories are entwined.

Several interactive elements have been included in the event. Visitors will be invited to participate in question and answer sessions with Ivy Tech students and faculty to explore how their creative visions were developed and built. Demonstrations in the basic culinary art methods used to create the pieces will allow visitors to learn more about the food products used. Ivy Tech librarians will lead separate discussions focused on the literature and language featured in the exhibit. An audience participation piece consisting of a large wall mural, designed by the Ivy Tech Fine Arts faculty, will be the concluding section of the exhibit. Visitors of all ages will use their creativity to contribute to the piece using food materials as the art medium. The mural will be displayed at the College after the completion of the festival.

Distinct areas within Ivy Tech will join strengths to make this event possible. Ivy Tech Libraries will coordinate the event and develop informative displays to encourage visitors to explore reading and literature long after the event concludes. Ivy Tech Schools of Fine Arts and Culinary bring award-winning expertise in their fields. Pairing students from these programs together to explore the “Food for Thought” theme will provide new and fertile playgrounds for both exhibitors and visitors.
