Event Description:

Participants will learn how to start a vegetable garden in their backyard. Local gardening expert, Ginny Roberts, will discuss the very basics of vegetable gardening, including what equipment is needed, where to put a plot, what size plot to consider, how to prepare the soil, what vegetables to grow, how to maintain the garden and when and how to harvest the vegetables--what to do at every stage of the growing season.

Unlike other gardening workshops, this workshop will not require a full day or a series of classes and will be focused on the novice gardener. By learning to grow even a small portion of their own food, participants will be able to add nutritious, safe food to their diet, increase their amount of outdoor exercise and, if instructions from this presentation are followed, reduce their amount of stress. All of which will help improve participants' lives.

KIB is a local leader in community improvement, including assisting neighborhoods with installing community gardens. Participants will have the opportunity to hear about KIB’s efforts in their area, in case they would like to put their new knowledge to use for the greater good. Green Piece Indy is a twice-weekly email with tips on living greener in Indianapolis. KIB’s building is the first civic nonprofit in Indiana to be LEED certified.
