Virginia Caine

Virginia  Caine Dr. Virginia A. Caine has been the director for the Marion County Health Department for the past fifteen years. She is also an associate professor of medicine for the infectious disease division of the Indiana University School of Medicine. Dr. Caine is past president for the American Public Health Association, the nation’s oldest and largest public health organization.

As co-director of the Indianapolis Healthy Babies Initiative, Dr. Caine was instrumental, with community leaders, in an effort that reduced the Black infant mortality rate to its lowest level ever in the history of Indianapolis.

Dr. Caine earned her bachelor’s degree from Gustavus Adolphus College in Minnesota and her medical degree at New York Upstate Medical Center in Syracuse. She did her internal medicine residency at the University of Cincinnati. She received her infectious disease training at the University of Washington in Seattle.
