Beatriz Vasquez Schlebecker

Beatriz Vasquez Schlebecker (play character is "Vanessa") was born and raised in Brownsville, TX, a border town between Texas and Mexico. She is the fourth child of Mere and Hilda Vasquez and first generation Mexican American. Along with her 8 other siblings, Beatriz was birthed through a midwife or a partera, an all natural birth and without the use of epidural. Her parents used the assistance of parteras or midwives as traditionally did by their parents and grandparents before them. The hospital was much more costly and not considered traditional. Many people in Brownsville used midwives to birth their children because it was so common, convenient and less expensive than hospitals.  Midwives usually charged between $350-500 per birth in the 60’s and 70’s. Beatriz is a celebrated Papel Picado Artist in Indianapolis and is currently featuring work at the Indianapolis Art Center in conjunction with the Dia de los Muertos event.  She is the mother of three children, all born at Community Hospital and with the little help of an epidural.
