Event Description:

Can God and jazz be a part of the same conversation? Many religious institutions now include music that was formerly deemed inappropriate for worship, while others still consider such music too secular. Join Marvin Chandler, minister and accomplished jazz musician, as he explores this issue in a multi-faceted program. Participate in one or all components:

  1. Enjoy Chandler’s talents as he performs and converses with the audience (3:00 p.m.–4:00 p.m.);
  2. Chandler leads a choir for singers of all abilities. Learn two Negro spirituals from Deep River by Dr. Howard Thurman, renowned theologian and preacher (4:30 p.m.–5:30 p.m.);
  3. Perform the spirituals during a public worship service (6:00 p.m.–7:00 p.m.).

Free. Interested singers need to pre-register. Presented by Second Presbyterian Church, Broad Ripple High School, and The Trio founded by Jack Gilfoy. Questions? Call 317-253-6461 or e-mail mfa@secondchurch.org.
