Local Voices on Living Generously
Mike Ahern, retired TV journalist: “This is a story about two small gestures of kindness that are linked forever in my memory, but in fact are separated by more than nine years, a thousand miles, and about 90º F.” Read more...
Deborah Asante, Asante Children’s Theatre: “To give of yourself, you must first believe you are enough, that you possess within you something worth giving. When you feel whole it is easy to give.” Read more...
Alpha Blackburn, Blackburn Architects: “A generous life, to me, implies a full life—expansive and rich with experiences. The challenge is to live with goodness and grace. It is impossible to achieve this idea without a good balance in your life.” Read more...
Rebecca Hutton, Theater of Inclusion: “That woman in the car, that stranger whose name I do not know, that person I will probably never meet again, had a substantial impact on me through a simple act.” Read more...
Fran Quigley, IU-Kenya Project: “A wealthy philanthropist did not establish civil rights for women and people of color. No one person provided guaranteed health care for the U.S. elderly, stopped the Holocaust, or ended colonialism. Instead, it was collective action—highly political and often contentious action—that won these struggles.” Read more...
Rev. David Rodriguez, Grace Community Church: “We sometimes wonder if he is a drug dealer. Of course we’re kidding, but what else could explain how this ex-missionary retiree can so often send $1,000 checks to our kids for their education?” Read more...
Imam Michael “Mikal” Saahir, Nur-Allah Islamic Center: “The real test comes in the company of those who turn you off or, worse, greatly disturb your peace. You begin to wonder, ‘How in the heck do you love such people?’ ” Read more...
Rabbi Sandy Eisenberg Sasso, Congregation Beth-El Zedeck: “We were strangers to him. There was a good chance we would never see each other again, that we could never return the favor. He didn’t owe us any gift. But he insisted, ‘Someday you will be in a similar position, and you too will give something of your work, of yourself, as a gift.’ ” Read more...
Juana Watson, Latino Affairs, Governor’s Office: “I began to realize that people doing humanitarian work were actually gaining something important for themselves. I noticed big changes in the villagers and the Americans who were helping them.” Read more...
Dr. Edward Wheeler, Christian Theological Seminary: “Barbara had a healthy son and my mother kept her word. She provided care, nurture, and love for over a year for baby Travis and never asked for any payment. Her example gave hope to an unwed mother and demonstrated love and acceptance to me—but that is not the end of the story.” Read more...
