Exploring Imagination: A Public Conversation
Sunday, November 2, 2:00 p.m., Clowes Memorial Hall (map)
Free Admission

Where does imagination reside, and who or what is cultivating its practice? What is needed to unleash public imagination in ways that benefit our communities’ economic, social, and cultural health?

The 13th annual Public Conversation will explore these and other thought-provoking questions in a spontaneous dialogue between nationally known voices in the arts, humanities, and religion. Moderated by Indiana author Scott Russell Sanders, the 2008 Public Conversation will feature Julie Dash, the first African American woman to produce a full-length general audience film release in the United States; Brian D. McLaren, a writer and national religious leader who frequently discusses postmodern thought and culture; and Richard Rodriguez, an author determined to understand the complex problems of ethnicity in modern American life.

Admission to the Public Conversation is free, but tickets are required. More info…

Festival 2009: Inspiring Places

Spirit & Place Director Pam Blevins Hinkle leads two free workshops on Friday, November 7 about the 2009 Spirit & Place Festival, which will examine the theme Inspiring Places.

Representatives from cultural, faith-based, educational, and civic organizations are invited to attend Imagining 2009: Inspiring Places to discuss key questions: How might we build awareness for and celebrate important places in our communities and neighborhoods? What is our sense of place here in central Indiana? How do the arts, religion, and humanities contribute to our sense of place? Consider these and other questions, explore synergies with other organizations, and get your creative juices flowing for 2009. The workshop will be held from 9 a.m.-noon at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Indianapolis. (map)

After the workshop, grab lunch nearby and stay for the afternoon session, Creating Imaginative Spirit & Place Programs, where you’ll learn tips and tools for crafting a quality program for next year’s Spirit & Place Festival. This session will be held from 1:30 p.m.-4:00 p.m. at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Indianapolis. (map)
