Public Conversation: Living Generously
Sunday, November 4, 2:00 p.m., Clowes Memorial Hall
Free Admission
Lively, unpredictable. thought-provoking...these are just a few ways to describe the annual Public Conversation, the signature event of the Spirit & Place Festival.
Moderated by Indiana author Russell Sanders, the 2007 Public Conversation will feature Patty Stonesifer, Indianapolis native and CEO of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation; Bernice Johnson Reagon, composer, scholar, and founder of the Grammy Award-winning ensemble Sweet Honey in the Rock; and Nathan Dungan, author of Prodigal Sons and Materials Girls: How Not To Be Your Child’s ATM and founder of Share Save Spend®, which helps people of all ages develop and maintain healthy financial habits.
"Where else can you eavesdrop on a dynamic conversation between national voices in diverse disciplines?" says Festival Director Pam Blevins Hinkle. "And this year, we moved the Conversation to 2 p.m. so that everyone can get home in time to watch the Colts vs. Patriots."
Conversationalists will explore the festival theme Living Generously. A deceptively simple theme, Living Generously provokes surprisingly rich and complex questions. How do we care for our neighbors when the neighborhood now stretches around the world? How do we treat others compassionately if we have been mistreated? How do we welcome the “other” in our midst? How do we share what we have in the face of scarce natural resources? How do we overcome selfishness in the face of a commercial culture that urges us to care only about our own appetites, appearance, and comfort?
Now in its 12th year, the Public Conversation is one of the city’s November highlights. Last year’s attendees had this to say:
- "Inspiring, challenging!"
- "This was wonderful. As a twenty-something, I am so encouraged by such strong models who provide hope, vision, excitement, possibility."
- "Excellent opportunity to hear respectful interchange and thought-filled ideas."
- "Thoroughly enjoyed this stimulating, dynamic presentation."
- "The community is so blessed to have this all encompassing form."
Admission to the Public Conversation is free, but tickets are required. Visit the Clowes Hall box office on the Butler University campus, 4602 Sunset Avenue, Indianapolis, from 10:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m. on Friday or 10:00 a.m.–2:00 p.m. on Saturday. Group tickets are available by calling Spirit & Place (on Friday only) at 317-278-3623. If supplies last, tickets may be available at Clowes Memorial Hall on Sunday. Clowes will honor a line beginning at 1:00 p.m. Those in line will fill any vacant seats as of 1:45 p.m. Outside doors open at 1:00 p.m., and books will be for sale before and after the event.
