Creating a Climate of Generosity
Sunday, November 18, 2:00 P.M.-4:00 P.M., Free Admission
Reilly Room, Atherton Union, Butler University
Co-sponsored by the Central Indiana Community Foundation
This is your chance to tie it all together! After hearing the Public Conversation, attending festival events, and reflecting on the festival theme, come to the first-ever closing conversation to explore what living generously means for the future of Central Indiana.
Butler University President Bobby Fong will moderate the discussion, which features the Honorable Sarah Evans Barker, Judge, United States District Court; Brian Payne, President of the Central Indiana Community Foundation; and Yvonne Perkins, Vice President, Community Relations at Citizens Gas.
An hour of panelist conversation will be followed by an hour of Q&A with the audience, exploring a range of interesting questions, which might include:
- If you were to construct an index of generosity for a city, what would be on it and where would Indianapolis rank?
- Indianapolis is known for successful public/private partnerships. How can we apply this knowledge to volunteering, neighborhood development, poverty, homelessness, education, etc.?
- How do you know when a public good/issue should be addressed within the public sphere, the charitable sphere, or both?
- How can the public, private and charitable sectors work together to encourage generosity?
- To what extent should we expect public leadership to set an agenda that spurs communities to be more generous?
- Does an obligation for local needs outweigh our obligation toward needs abroad? How do we judge which needs are greater?
- What acts of generosity have shaped our values, our work and our communities in Indianapolis and Central Indiana?
